A rear feed takes sheets up to 13 by 19 inches, so spreadsheets, plans, recital programmes and A3 artwork come out at full size instead of folded onto letter. Underneath, it is a fast four-ink EcoTank — 17 ISO pages a minute black, a 250-sheet cassette for everyday letter paper, a 35-sheet feeder, fax, Ethernet and a 2.7-inch touchscreen — running the same 502 bottles as the ET-3850, which means a wide-format printer with a third-of-a-cent black page. Two things to know before buying. The scanner is letter-and-legal only, so it prints 13×19 but cannot copy or scan it. And the chassis is genuinely large and heavy; measure the shelf first.

People buy this for one reason and it delivers on it: 13 by 19 inches of paper, from a printer whose ink costs a fraction of a cent a page. For spreadsheets, plans, posters and recital programmes it does a job nothing else in this price range does.

The mismatch owners hit is the scanner. It is a letter-and-legal flatbed, so the machine will happily print a tabloid sheet it cannot copy or scan back. Several owners describe discovering this after buying it specifically to duplicate large drawings. Canon's PIXMA TS9520a is the machine that both prints and scans 11 × 17, at a lower price and much higher running cost.

Questions that keep coming up

Can it scan or copy 13 × 19 pages?

No, and this catches people out. The scanner glass handles up to legal size. The printer takes 13 × 19 through the rear feed, but there is no way to copy or scan a sheet that size. If you need to duplicate large originals, the Canon PIXMA TS9520a prints and scans up to 11 × 17.

Is it good for art prints and posters?

It is a four-ink document printer that happens to take big paper. There is no grey or photo black, so black-and-white work will have a colour cast and tonal transitions are coarser than a six-ink machine's. For posters, flyers and charts it is excellent. For artwork you intend to sell, the ET-8550 prints the same 13 × 19 with six inks.

How big is it really?

Over 20 inches wide, nearly 17 deep and 27 lb, before the rear feed is extended for tabloid paper. Owners consistently report underestimating it. Measure the surface, and leave clearance behind it for the wide-format tray.
