For anyone printing forms, labels, charts or anything that goes in a binder and gets handled, that is worth real money. Twenty-two pages a minute in both black and colour, automatic duplex, a 250-sheet cassette, Ethernet and a 2.7-inch touchscreen make it a proper workgroup printer in a home-sized box. The catch is the toner. Four cartridges, and HP's 206X high-yield set is rated 3,150 black and 2,450 colour pages — good yields, but colour laser toner is the most expensive consumable in this catalogue per page. A four-colour page lands over twenty cents, which the Brother HL-L3280CDW beside it beats on both black and colour.

A colour laser for a home office, and unusually for HP it comes without HP+ attached — so third-party toner remains an option and the printer does not need to phone home. That alone puts it in a different category from HP's inkjets in owner discussion.

What it does well is produce colour that survives being handled: dry, permanent, identical on the thousandth page. What it does expensively is everything. Colour laser toner is the priciest consumable class in this catalogue by a wide margin, and this machine needs four cartridges of it. The Brother HL-L3280CDW, whose toner prices we could source in full, works out around nineteen cents for a page using all four colours — a fair guide to what to expect here.

Questions that keep coming up

Is this an HP+ printer?

No. The M255dw is sold outside HP+, so there is no lifetime commitment to Original HP supplies and no requirement to keep it connected to the internet. For buyers who like HP's hardware but not its terms, that makes the colour LaserJet line a different proposition from the OfficeJet and DeskJet 'e' models.

Why is there no cost per page shown?

HP publishes the 206X yields — 3,150 black and 2,450 colour pages — but retailer prices for the cartridges disagreed by more than fifty percent across sources we could actually read, and hp.com's own store does not return a price to a fetch. Publishing a number from one outlier would have been worse than publishing none.

Can it print photos?

It can put a photograph on paper, and it will look like a good photocopy. At 600 dpi with four toners there is no fine tonal gradation, and toner sits on the surface rather than soaking in. For charts, logos, forms and coloured headings it is excellent. For photographs, any six-ink tank printer here is in a different league.
