That combination — two paper sources, automatic duplex, an ADF, fax, Ethernet — is a genuinely complete small-office specification, and it is the Canon most directly opposite Epson's ET-4850. Canon wins on paper capacity, 350 sheets to Epson's 250; Epson wins on the screen, a 2.4-inch touchscreen against Canon's 1.35-inch monochrome OLED. On ink they are close enough that it should not decide the purchase. Both are honest four-ink machines that will outlive their cartridge-based equivalents several times over. The display is the thing to look at in a shop: driving a fax from a 1.35-inch monochrome strip is not pleasant.

This is Canon's answer to the Epson ET-4850 and it wins the specification comparison on paper handling — 350 sheets across two trays against Epson's 250 in one — while losing badly on the control panel. A 1.35-inch monochrome display on a machine that includes a fax modem is a genuine usability problem, and it is the thing owners comparing the two in a shop notice immediately.

Everything else is a fair fight. Both are four-ink tank all-in-ones with a feeder, duplex, fax and Ethernet, and both will cost a fraction of a cartridge printer to run. If the screen matters to you, buy the Epson. If two paper trays matter more, buy this.

How does it compare with the Epson ET-4850?

Canon gives you two paper trays and 350 sheets; Epson gives you a 2.4-inch touchscreen and a cost per page we could actually source. Both have a feeder, fax, automatic duplex and Ethernet. Owners tend to choose on the screen, which is the most visible difference in daily use.

Is the display really that bad?

It is a 1.35-inch monochrome OLED, and it is the most-criticised part of the machine. Setting up a fax, entering a scan destination, or working through copy options on it is slow. Most of the printer's functions are reachable from Canon's phone app instead, which is how owners end up using it.

Does the feeder scan both sides?

No. It pulls a 35-sheet stack through and captures one face. Double-sided originals need a second pass. Canon's MAXIFY GX7020 does single-pass two-sided scanning, at a considerably higher price and in a much larger body.
