For a household that needs a reliable black-and-white printer plus the occasional scan of a signed form, it is close to the ideal shape — laser reliability, no ink to dry out, and a footprint that still fits on a side table. The HP 141A cartridge holds 950 pages and the one in the box holds 500, which means the first replacement comes sooner than people expect from a laser; and HP+ enrolment commits the machine to Original HP supplies for life. The M110we with a scanner on top, and for a household that needs reliable black-and-white printing plus the occasional scan of a signed form, that is close to the right shape. Nothing dries out, nothing clogs, and it fits where a full multifunction would not.

The reservations are the same ones. A 950-page cartridge with a 500-page starter is small for a laser, so the running cost is worse than the class reputation suggests. And the HP+ terms apply here as on every 'e' model, which for buyers who chose a laser to escape HP's supplies behaviour is a genuine irritation. Declining HP+ at setup is the move owners recommend.

Questions that keep coming up

Does it have a document feeder?

No — it is a flatbed only, so multi-page scanning is one sheet at a time. Brother's DCP-L2640DW is the obvious alternative with a 50-sheet feeder, a faster engine and a 3,000-page toner cartridge, at a higher purchase price.

Should I enrol in HP+?

Owners overwhelmingly advise declining if you want the option of third-party toner later, because enrolment is permanent and binds the printer to Original HP supplies for its life. Enrolling gets you extra warranty and requires the printer to stay connected to the internet.

Is a laser really better for occasional printing?

For black-and-white, yes, and this is the reason the advice keeps being given. An inkjet left unused for a month may need cleaning cycles before it prints properly, and those cycles use ink. A laser has no liquid ink. If you print rarely and only in black, a small laser removes a whole category of problem.
