Fast, well built, and sold under HP+, which is the sentence that should decide whether you buy it. Twenty-two ISO pages a minute in black with an 18 ppm colour rating is quick enough to embarrass several lasers, and the hardware around it is proper office kit: 250-sheet cassette, 35-sheet feeder, automatic duplex, fax, Ethernet, a 2.7-inch touchscreen. HP+ is the condition attached to the low price. Enrolling gets extra warranty and free Instant Ink months; it also commits the printer to Original HP supplies for its entire life, enforced in firmware, and requires it to stay connected to the internet. That is a real constraint, and it is the single most common complaint owners of HP's 'e' models raise. The black cartridge is 2,500 pages for about ninety-five dollars — 3.8 cents a page, roughly ten times a tank printer's.

Under HP+ terms, yes — a permanent connection is a condition of the programme. Owners who wanted an office printer on an isolated network raise this specifically. A printer not enrolled in HP+ prints fine over a local network with no internet connection.
